Press release

Municipal Bonds returns to FOG Design+Art with a curated presentation titled Axis, a solo exhibition of new works by San Francisco–based artist Jane Springwater. Named for the line around which systems turn, Axis considers how orientation shapes perception through repetition, structure, and variation. Across these works, order and openness coexist as forms accumulate and realign. Working in black ink on paper, Springwater constructs sequences of hand-drawn marks: some bound to geometric grids and calculated systems, others developing organically. Repetition generates stability and transformation—patterns hold, yet shifts in density and placement create continuous motion.

Springwater's drawings emerge through sustained concentration, accruing into configurations that remain measured yet evolving. Structure is responsive: marks cluster into networks, tonal gradients surface, and patterns disperse into space. From a distance, the compositions register as atmospheric fields; up close, each line appears with exacting clarity, revealing strata of time and attention embedded in the work.

An axis, after all, is both anchor and vector: a line around which shapes revolve and a point from which relations unfold. In Springwater's practice, the axis is generative—a framework that guides movement while making room for divergence. Her drawings demonstrate how order transforms into rhythm, how lines can disperse, tilt, or coalesce, how presence and interval define perception. Seen together, the works reveal not a single axis but a shifting constellation, a field where drawing becomes both system and improvisation, both measure and motion.
