Afton Love

Afton Love (b. 1983, Butte Creek, California) is an American artist whose practice unfolds at the intersection of painting, sculpture, and environment. Rooted in the exploration of natural materials, she creates context-responsive works that balance spontaneity with an ongoing dialogue between body, material, and landscape.

 

Love received a BFA from California College of the Arts, San Francisco. She has presented solo exhibitions at Municipal Bonds, San Francisco; The Chateau Gallery, Mandelieu-la-Napoule, France; Harwood Museum of Art, Taos, New Mexico; 516 ARTS, Albuquerque, New Mexico; Little Big Space, Albany, California; and Roswell Museum, Roswell, New Mexico. Her work has also been included in group and two-person exhibitions at Marin Museum of Contemporary Art, Novato, California; Facebook Campus, Palo Alto, California; Santa Fe Art Institute, Santa Fe, New Mexico; Berkeley Art Museum, Berkeley, California; and Holiday Presents, Los Angeles, California.

 

Love has participated in residencies including La Napoule Art Foundation, Mandelieu-la-Napoule, France, with the invitation to return for a solo show; Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, Vermont; the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation, Taos, New Mexico; Santa Fe Art Institute, Santa Fe, New Mexico; and the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Foundation, Roswell, New Mexico. 

 

Her large-scale drawings are held in public and private collections, including the American Embassy in Mexico; Michelin-starred restaurant Mr. Jiu's in San Francisco; and the Breakthrough Institute in New York and Paris. Love lives and works in Ojo Caliente, New Mexico. She is represented by Municipal Bonds.
