"Structurally, these paintings revolve around disruption and disorientation—they are created by sandwiching together two or more images or gestures. Those layers interact and interrupt one another in unexpected ways, rendering the originals wholly or partially illegible, while also creating something new. On the one hand, the idea of disruption is indicative of the speed and flux of contemporary life; but it’s also reflective of the more personal experience of the inner and outer world, of walking in one place and thinking about another, of feeling like we are in two realities at once.
Despite this tension, moments of beauty and simplicity happen. Perhaps they happen because of it, since there is frequently something about beauty that is beyond our comprehension. When painting, I try to seek out a space where the basic elements—color, shape, physicality—are allowed to shine, but where the overall logic remains just out of reach."—Nathan Dilworth
